Hi to all my beautiful players! Thank you for visiting my corner today. It’s been said “expectations are resentments under construction”. I just remember a famous funny sketch from one of my favorites TV shows MAD TV – The sketch was called “Lower Expectations”. So, I am inspired by this title to explain a very elusive idea on what to expect when you study music. Nobody truly addresses this issue so, I will do it here.
Now, let’s be honest, usually we all tend to expect way too much out of ourselves when we are learning, without noticing how these high expectations can mess up our learning process and progress so much. Now, I have observed during these past 20 years at PLAYERS School that many students fall into this trap without even noticing it, subconsciously expecting way too much out of themselves, way too soon!.
“Timing is everything” a musician once said, so understanding that your expectation and TIME are a “pair” that should go together is a KEY element to find the way to be effective and improve quickly. What to expect is not near as important as WHEN to expect it. For example: If I expect to loose 20 pounds by day two of my diet, I am setting myself up for failure and disappointment. Playing “like” Henrik Linder on bass,Travis Orbin on drums or Guthrie Govan on guitar in a play along video or a week intensive it simply not going to happen.
Most students that come to study at PLAYERS are very talented indeed, but are not in time with expectations. I alwyas welcome them by saying something that makes no sense to them like “Lower your Expectations” and they look back at me a little bit confuse. This advice sounds weird, out of place and totally crazy coming from the President of an Institution like PLAYERS but I deeply believe that this sole idea of “Lower your Expectations” was key in the success of most students in this program.
To come down from the clouds to earth and to set foot on the ground…that’s what I mean! …Come to PLAYERS School ground and lower your expectations with us so that you can shine way up high!
