Vicky’s Corner – Secret and Sacred time.

Nowadays, we are in a constant company of our smart phones, laptops, computers and gadgets. We do driving, running, eating and even going to the bathroom hooked to the internet. Playing music is not an exception to this reality. I notice students, staff and faculty with their phones on their hand or pockets and truly never away from them. For example: see picture below. Unfortunately, that’s me, myself and my phone! 😛 Now, seriously, taking into account that this new world order in which we live in, we can not change or run away from, it is a hindrance to our road to become a professional player. I wonder how can we become better players under these conditions? I returned to play piano for real after taking a huge break from it to have a family and make a higher education music school for 25 years.  All of us make excuses, big ones like mine, that worked out to perfection for years and small ones, the everyday small stuff we tell ourselves and others and all starting with “I had to…answer this e-mail, brush my teeth, make a call, eat something, pic my nose, take a call, listen to a call, make a twit, answer a twit, re-send a twit, make a comment, “like” a comment, etc, etc, etc. These circumstances and its relative excuses are overwhelming for most of us. Too much to do, so little time. How can we then squeeze practice time then?… I found two words as my answer: 1)- SECRET: Hide from the world! No phones, no calls, no-one around. Just you, yourself and “it” . Make it same time every day. I come to The Players School of Music an hour earlier for my date with “it”. ( Note: I call it “It” as a term of endearment ). Turn off my phone. No computer, no excuses. I started this routine recently and after a couple of weeks of doing this, I started to notice that I was playing the piano better, faster and I was looking forward to be at The Players School of Music very early in the morning , alone with it! A true love affair! 😉 2)- SACRED: A moment during the day dedicated and devoted only to regard your instrument that will bring a trans formative effect on your musicality. This sacred time have been the most amazing way for me to start my day here at The Players School of Music. Please, share with me your secret and sacred moments with your instrument. Write me here!
