Critical Listening by Matt Bokulic
Hi gang,
I thought I would talk about the art of listening to music. There are several components to listening. Form, harmony, melody, rhythm, instrumentation, tempo, and style.
Today, lets talk about form.
There are sections to music that create the foundation for all the other components of music to fit in. This is called the form. The form can be many things, but there are at least three industry standards that song writers use create a composition. Song form A A B A, binary form, and 12 bar blues. Lets look at song form today.
A song form is 32 measures in length. The structure is written into 4 eight measure segments. They are titled A A B and A. There are eight measures of material stated, that is the first (A). That material is repeated. Our second (A). Then we have eight measures of new material, that is our (B) section. Then finally we repeat our first eight measures of material for the last (A) section. A A B A.
An excellent example of song form is “Somewhere over the rainbow”.
What songs can you find that are song form A A B A?
